Mastering Mediation: An Advanced Academic Training

Mastering Mediation is a free, 14-session workshop to be held in Autumn 2025 developed by PBI’s Mastering Mediation Team in collaboration with Lynn Hastings, Retired UN Assistant Secretary General, Resident, and Humanitarian Coordinator, and Achim Wennmann, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Professor at IHEID.

The course offers a practical introduction to core mediation concepts, linking theory to real-world cases, and equipping students with essential tools and techniques.

MORE ABOUT THE COURSE

The curriculum offers a comprehensive introduction to the key concepts and skills required for mediation. It is structured in three parts: (1) an introduction to the broader context of mediation, including peace, conflict, peace agreements, and the peace and mediation landscape; (2) core mediation skills; and (3) the application of these skills in complex contexts. The course is highly practice-oriented, linking theory to real-world situations and providing students with practical tools and techniques.

The course was conceptualised and initially drafted by the Mastering Mediation Team. Partner organisations subsequently enriched the course book and contributed to the delivery of individual sessions. This joint effort ensures both academic rigour and practitioner perspectives, creating a unique and highly valuable learning experience.

THE CURRICULUM

The sessions take place on Fridays throughout the autumn term at the IHEID, following a flexible format that accommodates other commitments. While full attendance is encouraged, students may register for individual sessions. Those attending at least 70% of all sessions will receive a PBI certificate of attendance and access to the full course book. Participation is free of charge, with approximately 20 participants expected per session.

Guest Lecturers

Each session will be taught by different professionals in the mediation and peacebuilding field. Guest lecturers include experienced mediators and practitioners from Interpeace, Geneva Centre for Security Policy, ExED, Swiss Peace, the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, and the Berghof Foundation.

Application Process

Mastering Mediation welcomes all Master’s students from the Graduate Institute and Executive Education professionals, as well as external participants. The program particularly encourages applications from young students and professionals pursuing careers in peacebuilding and mediation. The course is limited to approximately 20 participants, who will be selected through a brief application process. Selected participants are encouraged to attend all sessions.

Apply through a brief Google Form open from August 5, 2025 to September 5, 2025.
